Helping Mom and Baby During Pregnancy in Franklin

Helping Mom and Baby During Pregnancy in Franklin

Whether you are having your first child or you are already a veteran to giving birth, pregnancy is full of many mysteries as each child is a different journey.  As a father of two girls, I witnessed the amazing differences of each of their pregnancies from how nauseous their mother felt to how one baby was calmer in the womb and the other was so active.  So, I understand if you or a loved one have questions about what is going on with your body, your baby and are wondering how best to answer them.

How can you prepare your body for a healthier pregnancy or improve your health while pregnant?  Can you improve how you feel during pregnancy without medications since they are unsafe to take while pregnant?  Is there a natural, safe approach to dealing with back pain, headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy?  Is there something that can be done to ease the pain of labor and to even shorten labor times naturally?

If you’ve asked any of these questions then read on…

Chiropractic Care in Franklin for Pregnant Women

The goal of chiropractic in Franklin for pregnancy is to allow the mother’s body the best opportunity to adapt to the structural and physiological demands of pregnancy for both her and baby.  Mothers bring any pre-existing spinal misalignments and nerve imbalances to the pregnancy that are then challenged by the growing demands of carrying and birthing her baby.

It is important to consider how any spinal or pelvic misalignments can affect the mother’s ability to comfortably carry the weight of her growing baby and how they can affect the alignment of her birth canal.  For example, the physical demands of pregnancy can be more difficult if the mother’s spinal structure and posture is misaligned.  In fact, Dr. Abraham Towbin a Harvard researcher states that trauma can misalign the bony pelvis (3).  This means that previous falls, sports injuries, or accidents may contribute to pelvic misalignments, necessitating a chiropractic checkup.

Chiropractic care at Rhythm of Life Chiropractic, LLC offers many benefits during pregnancy that are often overlooked and poorly understood.  For example, half of women reportedly experience back pain during their pregnancy and up to 75% have back pain during labor (1-2).  However, still relatively few women today utilize chiropractic care during pregnancy.  But here is some good news, 143 out of 170 patients receiving spinal manipulative therapy – chiropractic adjustments – reported relief of back pain during pregnancy. In addition, there was significantly less likelihood of back labor when chiropractic adjustments were administered during pregnancy (5).  Another study reports that a chiropractic and medical collaborative effort showed that 3 out of 4 patients who received chiropractic care during their pregnancy found relief of their pain (6).  Chiropractic adjustments have been found to be safe for the correction of spinal misalignments in the pregnant patient.  Out of 17 participants who had received chiropractic care, 16 reported “clinically important improvement” with no adverse effects (4).

Many pregnant mothers I’ve spoken to have been led to believe that c-section delivery is the safest way in all cases.  The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states that other than for cases of placenta previa or uterine rupture, “cesarean delivery appears to pose greater risk of maternal morbidity and mortality than vaginal delivery for most low-risk pregnancies (7).

In 2011, 1 in 3 births in the US were by cesarean section delivery according to the ACOG (7).  The most common reason for primary c-sections is dystocia, “abnormal progress in labor.”  Unfortunately, there is little consensus on what constitutes normal vs. abnormal labor progression.  In that same report, the ACOG states that “a specific absolute maximum length of time spent in the second stage of labor beyond which all women should undergo operative delivery has not been identified” (7).  This is to say that the labor process can last longer than expected and still be safe and healthy and not require intervention.

Regular chiropractic care is also helpful with reducing labor times.  One study showed that women who received chiropractic care throughout their first pregnancy have, on average, a 25% shorter labor time whereas women who received chiropractic care throughout their second or future pregnancies have, on average, 31% shorter labor times (8).

No matter whether you are preparing to conceive or preparing to have your baby, getting your spinal misalignments corrected can help you have a healthier pregnancy and an easier delivery.
