Sometimes the sunlight at 6am wakes us up too early or the lamplight in a cozy room is too overpowering and we want to cover it up. What can be bothersome about these examples is that they are an intrusion on our ability to see or simply to maintain the level of light that we’re comfortable with at that time. If the light comes from a source outside of us, we may be curious and welcome it as some do at 6am in the example above. Others want to stay where they are and not get out of bed just yet.

On another level, what can cover up our inner light, our spirit, our uniqueness? Think about how many times you were judged, criticized or labeled in some way and you internalized it and adopted it as a part of your self-concept of who you are. We can even do this to ourselves inside our own minds! Whatever messages we send on a continual basis to our subconscious mind become a part of our beliefs. Our beliefs guide our thoughts, thoughts guide actions and actions create our results. A popular saying is: “what you think about comes about”. Imagine if each time you created a false view of yourself or your life you were putting on a pair of glasses to see things that way. After a few pair of glasses you’d find yourself blind and incapable of seeing the world for what it really is. As you begin each day, think about yourself as wearing no glasses and seeing yourself and your life as full of limitless possibility.

Our thoughts and actions are one and the same with how our body’s systems are working on the inside. Positive thoughts and positive beliefs are healthful and stimulate that part of our nervous system that initiates the repair, healing, and balancing of body and cellular functions. This “positive” response is also called our rest and digest mode. Our body is adapted to functioning in this mode most of the time. Negative thoughts and beliefs, on the other hand, turn on our nervous system’s stress response. This causes our system to go into an adaptive mode and prepares us for fight or flight. While this response is vital when necessary, many of us live in this mode versus using it for short-term survival. This has devastating effects on the body and is responsible for the high death rate from chronic disease in the industrialized world.

The important point here is that our beliefs and our thoughts have been proven in the research to affect our body and therefore our health. Like the lampshades and glasses, we need to be aware of our negative beliefs and thoughts and change our input everyday to be full of positive beliefs and thoughts. Make positive impressions on your mind, your body, your loved ones and your life every day.
